Rodney Hall's "Popeye Never Told You"
31/01/11 15:23
I so enjoyed the sense of the child’s voice captured by Rodney Hall in this childhood memoir of WWII. Hall’s syntax, paragraphing and punctuation are altered to better reflect a sense of childhood, wonder and naivety and it works beautifully. I felt close to the childhood Rodney right from the first page; I wanted what he wanted; I loved the people he loved. The work reminds me of some of the best work of Janet Frame. Neither author shies away from darkness, but their narratorial take on the world as we know it is fresh and quirky and delectable. I didn’t want to the book to end. I didn’t want Rodney to grow up.
